Tecula mecula
↔ Varies by recipeTecula mecula is a traditional dessert from Extremadura, in western Spain, made with almonds, egg yolk and sugar on a puff pastry base. It is one of the most recognisable sweets of the region.
History
Its origins go back to an old recipe that, according to tradition, was kept secret for a long time. The earliest surviving record links it to the Casa Fuentes pastry shop in Olivenza (Badajoz), where it was found and written down, although the sources do not give the exact date.
Over time, the preparation has been passed down within Extremaduran confectionery, and it has stayed closely tied to the local bakeries.
Culture
It is part of Extremadura's sweet heritage and is recognised as a local dessert for after meals. There are variations: some recipes include pork lard and cinnamon, while others leave them out and focus on almond and egg yolk. It is mainly associated with the region's traditional confectionery.
