Purcari (Nistreană)

Purcari is a wine region in Moldova, located in the southeastern part of the country along the western bank of the Dniester. It is best known for its red wines, such as Roșu de Purcari and Negru de Purcari, and for aged wines made from red grape varieties suited to its climate.

History

The region is also known as Nistreană. In the southeastern zone, along the western coast of the Dniester, lies the Purcari winemaking centre. The strip of land along the river is the geographic frame that defines this zone.

Purcari's reputation rests on its red wines. Roșu de Purcari and Negru de Purcari are the names associated with the place and the ones that have made it known. The available material does not allow us to fix precisely when that reputation took shape or the exact stages of its development, so this account is best read as an outline of general features rather than a closed chronology.

As for its spread, the reference texts do not describe its reach beyond the country and offer no figures on the subject.

Culture

Vines are a central part of Purcari's life and landscape. The local climate favours red grape varieties, and aged wines made from them form the basis of production. The red varieties cited in the reference texts are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot noir, Malbec, Rara Neagră and Saperavi.

Alongside the reds, the vineyard includes white varieties such as Chardonnay and Sauvignon blanc. This mix shows that the region is not limited to a single style, although its reputation rests on its aged red wines.

Wine is part of Moldova's national identity, a country with an important viticultural tradition. In Purcari, that tradition rests on a riverside landscape, varieties suited to the climate and a production centred on aged reds.
